Choosing a solicitor

Specialised knowledge
With increasing legislation, from the UK and the EC, the law continues to become increasingly complex.

This is why it is important to check that the law firm you select has the right level of knowledge to meet your requirements. As in medicine, sometimes a general practitioner can resolve your problem—but often a consultant’s expertise is what is required.

For this reason, we concentrate on our areas of strength—the ‘non-contentious’ areas of the law. So we do not for example handle divorces or criminal matters.

Reputation
If you are able to get a good recommendation from a trusted source, what better?

What will it cost?
Different lawyers work to different hourly rates. Often computerisation helps keep costs down in areas of work such as conveyancing.

You should look for clear answers: and be sure that if things get more complicated than expected, there are no unpleasant charges in store. We take care to set out our charges clearly and fairly.

Buying and selling—do I need a solicitor at all?
There are cut-price conveyancing services available but often provided by unqualified or underqualified people—who do not have our broader legal knowledge and experience.

The good news is that most house transactions go smoothly. But some do get horribly complicated—there’s a lot at stake if things go wrong: do you want to take a risk?

Do I like the people?
If you feel that your enquiry is not handled in a businesslike and professional way, look elsewhere. After all, you are the customer!
